This project aim is to meet an identified need to begin work with Year 6 Primary boys at risk of finding transition to secondary school a challenge for a variety of reasons. Primary schools identify a number of boys in Year 6 who could be described as ‘on the edge of gangs’ and at risk of being excluded from mainstream education due to their behaviour. these boys benefit from a male mentor who is not part of the school staff team. The need for this preventative work to begin before they reach secondary school is clear. We have also identified the need to do some follow up work in Year 7 feeder secondary schools. The project works closely in collaboration with a local after school youth clubs. The project uses a dedicated worker to provide support across primaries with follow up into secondary schools, on an individual and group basis, including partnership work with parents, school staff and other professionals where relevant eg Pupil Referral Units, Social Workers. The project also needs to support these boys through holiday periods as without a continuous engagement they can easily be distracted.
